Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that is used to promote natural healing and function through the body’s ability to heal itself. It can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions such as those related to pain and symptoms such as nausea, for example.

The basic foundation of this medicine is that everyone’s body has life energy that flows through called Qi. It flows through your body through channels called meridians that connect your major organs. In Chinese medical theory, an illness can be caused by the blockage or unbalance of the flow of Qi.

An acupuncture practitioner works with a holistic approach that views your body as a complete energy system where the body and mind work in tandem by influencing and balancing each other. In comparison, conventional western medicine’s methods are designed to treat disease by isolating it from the person who is afflicted.

The most common ailments that are associated with acupuncture treatments are usually pain related. When you meet with an acupuncture practitioner, they will make their medical diagnosis via a thorough examination and consultation with you. They will also consider the onset of your condition to determine if their treatment can help you. As each patient and condition is unique, the determination how effective acupuncture will be for you cannot be done without a full assessment. Click here to get in touch with us.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your acupuncturist will recommend the most beneficial acupuncture points. With needles that can be as fine as human hair, for your treatment they will be inserted into specific points near or on the skin’s surface. These strategic placements are used for the treatment of various illnesses by altering biochemical and physiological conditions.

The acupuncture points used in your care have been mapped out by the Chinese over a period of 2000 years. They are areas of specific electrical sensitivity that have been recognized as effective areas for the treatment of specific medical conditions.

Acupuncture is often considered a preventative treatment. With regular visits to your practitioner, usually 2 to 4 times per year, it is believed that this treatment can prevent disease while promoting health and increasing vitality and energy.

As a secondary treatment complimenting conventional western medicine, acupuncture can be quite effective, especially in the treatment of pain and stress relief. In some cases, however, acupuncture is used as a last resort if other treatment types for serious and complex medical issues are proving ineffective.

Acupuncture should be used a part of a comprehensive health management program that includes both eastern and western medical practices. Acupuncture is not recommended for all types of illnesses or conditions.
